"The Golden Compass" (Movie)

The Golden Compass

Watch the trailer

I enjoyed this movie very much. Lyra was likable for the most part, with a couple of parts showing her between adult and kid struggle. Lord Asriel is likable, but a little difficult to get to know because he isn't a big part of the movie. I would have liked to see more of him. Mrs Coulter is an interesting character. She was beautiful and elegant and powerful. But she was never likable to me. And the monkey, just plain creepy. Kidman plays her part well, and her character is an excellent example of what we know- so far- about the Magisterium. I liked both of Lyra's friend, and especially her adorable daemon, Pan.

The story is well written. It kept our attention the entire time. It was enjoyable, without moving too fast or two slowly. We were able to follow the story line and the characters fairly well, with a few spots that I had to ask a question or two.

The *only* part I didn't like was how suddenly it ended. I hate those types of endings. And if you do too, be prepared.

I recommend the movie. It's a fun family film, and great twist of fantasy. It would make an excellent New Year's Eve event.

I tried to read the book and I couldn't get through it. Maybe the movie will make more sense :)

This is one I've been wondering if I should see or not - glad to get your recommendation! Maybe I'll try and catch a matinee this weekend.
